Power management company Eaton's Circuit Protection division is helping original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), contractors and system owners protect vital photovoltaic (PV) power systems by offering a complete range of reliable solar circuit protection solutions. With Eaton's complete portfolio, from fuses and circuit breakers to power distribution blocks and surge protective devices (SPDs), customers in commercial, utility and residential solar segments can reduce installation costs, maintain reliable operations, help enhance safety and maximize energy harvested.

"The unique nature of solar PV systems demands the need for equipment manufacturers to develop solutions that are increasingly more efficient at higher direct current (DC) voltages in harsh environments. As the solar market evolves into a mature, sustainable technology, system owners are demanding lower cost of ownership solutions and faster return on their investment," said Jason Ezzell, product manager, Eaton's Bussmann Division. "Eaton has made it a priority to develop innovative and energy efficient overcurrent and overvoltage solutions to ensure system reliability -providing system manufacturers, contractors and owners with the peace of mind knowing their equipment is protected."

Eaton is a single source provider and offers a range of solutions from its Circuit Protection division designed to protect PV panels, conductors and equipment. Eaton helps ensure that wire harnesses, combiner boxes, recombiner boxes and inverters are operating with maximum reliability, while adhering to the applicable solar specific code requirements. This includes PV fuses that offer global acceptance with ratings up to 1,500 volts direct current (Vdc), as well as high-speed and alternating current (AC) fuses.

Eaton's Circuit Protection division also offers SPDs for PV overvoltage and lightning current protection in systems up to 1200Vdc. Utilizing patented, fast-acting Short-Circuit Interrupting (SCI) technology, these solutions isolate systems to help prevent direct current arch damage. For fast and efficient monitoring, PV SPDs include easyID™ local visual indication and optional remote contact signaling. SPD solutions are available for Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) applications.

Eaton also offers molded-case circuit breakers designed to help customers reduce space and cost while enhancing the safety and reliability of solar PV systems. Eaton's PVGard 600Vdc per pole and 1000Vdc poles-in-series lineups are 100 percent rated to the UL® 489B standard for use in PV applications, providing cost savings by reducing the size of breaker ampacity, breaker frame, conductor and enclosure. Additional benefits of the PVGard circuit breakers include accessories to enable isolation upon arc fault and undervoltage conditions, as well as on and off operation remotely, status monitoring and individual circuit on/off via handle mechanism.

Additional solar solutions available for residential, commercial and utility-scale systems include in-line PV string protectors, modular fuse holders, AC/DC safety switches and power distribution blocks.
